What a verdict does—and does not—mean.

Mephistopheles reports an evidence-bounded assessment under a named policy at a stated time. It does not issue an oracle’s truth score.

The result contract

A result is valid only as a whole: atomic claim records, evidence relationships, source provenance, coverage, abstention, risk drivers, policy version, engine configuration, and limitations. Removing uncertainty or coverage changes its meaning.

Supported is not “proven true.”

It means that suitable evidence obtained within the active profile’s scope supported the examined claim. New evidence, a different date, jurisdiction, source policy, or claim interpretation can change the result.

Verdict taxonomy

StateDecision rule
SupportedSufficient suitable evidence entails the claim and no stronger suitable evidence refutes it.
ContradictedSuitable evidence directly refutes a material component.
DisputedCredible evidence conflicts, or unresolved context prevents one evidence-bounded conclusion.
UnverifiableSufficient suitable evidence was not obtained. This is abstention, not support.
Not checkableThe span is opinion, prediction, instruction, value judgement, or otherwise outside factual verification.

Coverage is independent

The coverage estimator scans the submitted content independently of extracted claims and reports missing or uncertain factual-looking spans. A clean set of examined claims with incomplete coverage remains a qualified result.

Reliability and risk

Claim reliability represents the adjudicator’s calibrated confidence in that verdict—not the probability that a sentence is metaphysically true. Overall risk weights materiality and verdict severity, then adds a coverage penalty. The versioned risk model is displayed in every result.

Corrections

A suggested correction is generated only for a contradicted atomic component, bounded to retrieved evidence, and independently reverified before display. It remains a suggestion for contextual human review.

Human review

Machine results remain immutable. Authorized reviewers can accept, override, request evidence, assign, resolve, or reopen a claim; the review record is appended separately with actor, time, explanation and audit event.
