Why AI essays contain sources that do not exist
If you ask an AI for an essay with citations, some of those citations will be fabricated. The model produces references that look real, with plausible authors and titles, that resolve to nothing.
Researchers have measured this. In a 2023 study by Bhattacharyya and colleagues, of 115 references ChatGPT-3.5 generated for short papers, 47% were entirely fabricated and only 7% were both authentic and accurate (see the PubMed record). Rates vary by model and subject, but the pattern is consistent: never assume an AI-supplied citation is real.
Submitting a fabricated source is an academic-integrity problem whether or not you knew it was fake, which is why checking before you hand in matters.
How to check an AI essay before submitting

Why a real citation can still be a problem
Even when a source exists, the AI may have cited it for a point the source never makes. A citation that resolves is not proof the source backs your sentence.
