An AI content detector estimates the probability that a piece of text was written by an AI rather than a human. It judges style and statistical patterns, not truth. Detecting who or what wrote something tells you nothing about whether the claims in it are accurate — that is a fact-checker's job.
What is an AI content detector?
An AI content detector is a tool that estimates whether a passage of text was generated by an AI model rather than written by a human. It looks at statistical fingerprints — word predictability, sentence uniformity, and other stylistic signals — and outputs a probability or a human/AI label. Tools like GPTZero and Originality.ai are examples.
These tools serve a real purpose: schools checking for undisclosed AI use, publishers screening submissions, platforms flagging machine-generated content at scale. Within that scope they do useful work, though even there they are probabilistic and can be wrong.
What they measure is authorship — the likely source of the text. They say nothing about whether the text is correct.
Why an AI content detector is not a fact-checker
This is the market-correcting distinction: detecting AI-written text is not verifying truth. The two answer different questions.

The confusion is costly. Human-written text can be riddled with false claims a detector will happily label 'human'. AI-written text can be entirely accurate yet get flagged as machine-made. Authorship and accuracy are independent axes.
Detectors have their own accuracy problems
Even at their actual job, AI content detectors are imperfect and can misclassify human writing as AI — which has caused real harm in academic settings, including disputes and lawsuits over students wrongly accused. That is a reason to be cautious with them, and a separate issue from the fact that they don't check truth at all.

A worked example
Paste an AI-written paragraph that happens to be 100% accurate into a content detector: it may return '95% AI'. Now paste a human-written paragraph containing a fabricated statistic: it returns 'human' — and the false statistic sails through untouched. The detector did its job (guessing authorship) and told you nothing about the falsehood.
